The ‘Not So Short Walk’ for Autisk

Short Construction is gearing up for an extraordinary challenge this May. Four team members – Adrian Short, Darren Peatfield, Ged Rodgers, Max Webster – will take on The Not So Short Walk, a five‑day, 184km trek from head office all the way to the base of Snowdon.

Taking place on 11–15 May, the walk will see the team travel through Greater Manchester, Cheshire and North Wales, before completing the challenge alongside friends, family and colleagues with a 3,199-foot ascent to the summit of Snowdon on 16 May.

But this isn’t just a physical challenge, it’s a deeply personal one.

The team is raising funds for Autisk, a Stockport-based charity that provides vital support to autistic children and young people. Autisk offers sensory‑safe social groups, workshops, advice and signposting for families who have children with additional needs including autism, ADHD and Cerebral Palsy.

The charity has faced an incredibly difficult year. After being forced to leave unsafe premises, Autisk has had to relocate and is now paying triple the previous rent an unexpected financial burden that puts strain on their ability to offer essential services.

For Adrian and Lesley Short, the cause is especially meaningful. Their son Joshua, now an adult, is autistic, giving them a deep, personal understanding of just how essential organisations like Autisk are for children with additional needs and for the families who support them.

“Autisk is a lifeline for so many children and parents across Stockport,” Adrian shared. “For many autistic children, a stable and predictable routine is absolutely essential, so when organisations like Autisk face disruption or are forced to move, the impact on families can be immense. We’re taking on this challenge because we’ve seen first‑hand the difference charities like Autisk make, and we’re proud that our colleagues recognise this too. We want to help secure Autisk’s future so their team can focus on delivering the services they excel in, without the constant pressure of financial uncertainty.”

The Short Construction team aims to raise £25,000, which will help Autisk find long‑term, affordable premises and continue delivering the services local children and their families rely on.
